How did your grad school experience prepare you for the position you are in today? Can you point out any particular skills that helped you the most to be in the position you are in today? I have a fantastic team and I've learned so much from all of them, but there are times when none of us have experience with a new situation - we just have to figure it out!Ĥ. In the process of taking on new responsibilities, it's been so important to be willing to learn new things and to be resourceful in my approach to learning. Being adaptable and open to that change has been critical to growing with Aspect, as well as being willing to take on new responsibilities. What were the obstacles you encountered during your rapid, upward transitions at Aspect Biosystems, and how did you overcome them?Īspect has more than doubled in size since I started, which means that change has had to happen quickly. It's been a fantastic role - I'd highly recommend an Applications Scientist role to grads who want to stay close to the science but who want to move more towards working with people or towards the business side.ģ. I knew that moving away from the bench would likely be a multistep process, so I embraced the opportunity to work as a customer-facing scientist. After taking some time off to travel, I dove into job searching and eventually narrowed in on roles that mostly involved working with smaller companies where I saw the potential to grow with the company. ![]() I really wasn't sure what I wanted to do afterwards - I loved thinking about science, but wasn't sure that research was where I wanted to be. What motivated you to pursue a career in industry after grad school?īefore starting at Aspect, I completed a PhD in nanotechnology engineering. As a technical expert with an outward-facing perspective, I also work with the marketing team to develop content, and with the development team to help guide the development of new products.Ģ. I lead the team that supports researchers using the technology, which involves training new customers, discussing their research goals, and supporting them with protocols and advice. I am an Applications Scientist at Aspect Biosystems, a biotechnology company that develops and uses microfluidic 3D bioprinting technology in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Tell us about yourself and your current position. Bedford is a passionate climber and explorer.ġ. She was the recipient of the NSERC Alexander Graham Bell Graduate scholarship (2013) and Waterloo Institute for Nanotechnology Fellowship in 2012.
